In October 2022, bp submitted a bid for its proposed large-scale green hydrogen production facility, HyGreen Teesside, to the UK government’s Hydrogen Business Model and Net Zero Hydrogen Fund. The project targets hydrogen production in 2025 with an initial capacity of 80 MW, before expanding to 500 MW by 2030.

Columbus Project

Carmeuse, ENGIE and John Cockerill are collaborating for a project which will concentrate CO2 from an innovative type of lime kiln, combine it with green hydrogen and produce “e-methane”, a renewable gas that can be used for various purposes. The total investment cost for the project is over 150 million euros. The implementation of this project would make it possible to avoid more than 900,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions during the first 10 years.

ATCO Suncor Hydrogen

Two Canadian companies, Suncor Energy and ATCO Ltd., are collaborating on the early-stage design and engineering for a potential clean hydrogen project with a capacity of 300,000 tonnes per annum. Suncor and ATCO expect to make a final investment decision in 2024 and, if finalised, the project could be operational by 2028. Approximately 65% of the produced hydrogen would be used in refining processes and approximately 20% will be blended into the Alberta natural gas grid. The project is a major part of the planned Atlas carbon capture hub and will provide CO2 volumes for storage.

Acorn Hydrogen

The Acorn Hydrogen project reforms North Sea natural gas into clean hydrogen, with CO2 emissions safely mitigated through the Acorn CCS infrastructure. The first phase 200-Megawatt hydrogen plant aims to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 400,000 tonnes per year. Genesis Energies completed the engineering contract for the concept evaluation stage of the project.

Stanlow Refinery Hydrogen

Vertex Hydrogen is a joint venture between Essar Oil UK and Progressive Energy. Vertex’s low carbon hydrogen production plant will be a core part of the HyNet low carbon cluster. Low carbon hydrogen will be produced at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex located in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The hydrogen will be produced using Johnson Matthey’s best in class LCHTM technology. The low carbon hydrogen produced will then be safely transported via underground pipelines to industry where it will be used to replace the fossil fuel, natural gas.

Project Cavendish

Project Cavendish aims to kickstart a hydrogen economy in the South East of England by producing blue hydrogen in the industrial region of Isle of Grain. Initially, the site will produce 700 MW of hydrogen before scaling up to 1.75 GW by 2030, increasing the total CO2 abatement to 3 million tonnes per annum.
