Mendota BECCS

Posted by

This joint venture looks to construct a BECCS plant which will convert agricultural waste biomass, such as almond trees, into a renewable synthesis gas that will be mixed with oxygen in a combustor to generate electricity. More than 99% of the carbon from the BECCS process is expected to be captured for permanent storage by injecting carbon dioxide (CO2) underground into nearby deep geologic formations. The project is currently on hold as Chevron and Schlumberger have withdrawn the application after criticism from the EPA.

Drax has submitted plans to build its multi-billion-pound bioenergy with carbon capture and storage project at its North Yorkshire power station. Construction work is due to begin in 2024 with the first of the BECCS units coming online in 2027 and the second in 2030. The project is one of 20 which has been shortlisted for phase-2 of the UK government’s CCUS cluster sequencing process.
