Donaldsonville Complex

Posted by

CF Industries is investing $198.5 million to construct a CO2 compression and dehydration unit at its Donaldsonville Complex in Louisiana. CF Industries estimates this project would capture up to 2 million tons of process CO2 per year, enabling the production of up to 1.7 million tons of blue ammonia annually. Engineering activities and procurement of major equipment for the facility are in progress, and modification of the site’s existing equipment to allow integration with existing operations has begun. It was announced in October 2022 that CF Industries would collaborate with EnLink and ExxonMobil on the project. Enlink will provide the transportation infrastructure for the captured carbon and ExxonMobil will be responsible for the permanent storage at their property in Vermilion Parish.

El Dorado Ammonia

Posted by

LSB Industries have entered into an agreement with Lapis Energy to develop a project to capture and permanently sequester CO2 at LSB’s El Dorado, Arkansas facility. Lapis, backed by Cresta Fund Management, a Dallas-based middle-market infrastructure investment firm, will make 100% of the capital investment required for the project development. The project will commence immediately, with expected completion by 2025, subject to the approval of a Class VI permit, at which time CO2 injections will begin. This is the first CCS project announced in the state of Arkansas and the third CCS project from ammonia production in the U.S.

CF & Mitsui Ammonia

Posted by

Mitsui & Co., one of the leading ammonia marketers in the world, and CF Fertilisers, the world’s largest producer of ammonia, have announced their intention to jointly develop a greenfield ammonia production facility in the United States. The new facility will produce blue ammonia by leveraging carbon capture and sequestration processes to reduce carbon emissions by more than 60% compared to conventional ammonia. Demand for blue ammonia is expected to grow significantly as a decarbonized energy source, both for its hydrogen content and as a fuel itself. The companies expect to commence a front end engineering and design (FEED) study during the second half of 2022, which typically takes 9-12 months from the start date to complete. A final investment decision is expected to occur in 2023. Construction and commissioning of a new world-scale capacity ammonia plant typically takes approximately 4 years from that point.

Yazoo City Complex

Posted by

CF Industries intend to install a CO2 compression and dehydration unit at their Yazoo City Complex site to capture 500,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum. The Yazoo City project will commence once a third-party transport and sequestration partner has been confirmed and timed to coincide with CO2 transport pipeline construction.

Geismar Ammonia

Posted by

Nutrien Ltd. have announced that it is evaluating the construction of a large-scale clean ammonia facility at their Geismar site. The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 1.2 million metric tonnes of clean ammonia and capture at least 90 percent of CO2 emissions, permanently sequestering more than 1.8 million metric tonnes of CO2 in dedicated geological storage per annum.

Yara Sluiskil

Posted by

Yara and Northern Lights have agreed on the main commercial terms to transport CO2 captured from Yara Sluiskil, an ammonia and fertilizer plant in the Netherlands, and permanently store it under the seabed off the coast of western Norway. This represents the world’s first commercial agreement on cross border CO2 transport and storage. This is groundbreaking for the decarbonisation of European heavy industry, opening the market for cross border CO2 transport and storage as a service.

Barents Blue Clean Ammonia

Posted by

The Barents Blue project’s concept is to use natural gas from the Barents Sea to produce ammonia. It promises to provide Europe’s first large-scale clean ammonia production, located in Finnmark in Northern Norway. Once operational, the facility will have a production capacity of 3000 tonnes of ammonia per day. During the production process, the project will capture carbon and permanently store it in the Polaris reservoir.
