Decarb Connect Events Offsetting

How are we managing the impact of our events?

Offsetting our events reduces Decarb Connect’s carbon footprint but this is only one element to us decarbonising and we will continue to implement ways to reduce our carbon footprint within our team and working practices across the whole business.

At Decarb Connect we have partnered with ClearBlue Markets to track and offset the emissions produced during our events, both virtual and in-person. The aim of this is to understand how our activities impact the environment and establish better practices to reduce our carbon footprint.

The projects we contribute to in order to offset our emissions are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Click here to learn more about the UN SDGs.

Decarb Connect Europe | Amsterdam, Netherlands | June 21 – 23, 2022

For our second in-person event, Decarb Connect Europe (21 – 23, June 2022), we monitored: attendee travel, attendee accommodation and event energy consumption. The total emissions from this event were 52.70 tonnes of CO2.

We are offsetting these emissions with the Afforestation Project in Uruguay, which consists of the construction of forest plantations in the region of Verra, Uruguay. These forests will sequester CO2 from the atmosphere and provide high-value, long-lived timber products. This project contributes towards Sustainable Development Goals 1, 8 and 15, as it will increase the gross value of production per unit area of land, contribute to new local employment opportunities, and will increase flora and fauna biodiversity in the region.

Decarb Connect North America | Houston, TX, USA | March 29 – 31, 2022

For our first in-person event, Decarb Connect North America (29 – 31, March 2022), we monitored: attendee travel, attendee accommodation and event energy consumption. The total emissions from this event were 66.88 tonnes of CO2.

We are offsetting these emissions with the Ambatolampy Solar Project in Madagascar, which consists of the construction and operation of a greenfield 20 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in the South-East of Vakinankaratra region, Madagascar. These panels will capture solar energy and produce electricity for the national grid. This will allow the country to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and move towards more sustainable source of energy. This project contributes towards Sustainable Development Goals 7, 8 and 9, as it provides a native energy source from a zero-cost fuel, contributes to new local employment opportunities, and will help innovate Madagascar’s infrastructure.

Decarb Connect Festival | Virtual Event | 25 – 27, January 2022

Decarb Connect Festival (25 – 27, January 2022) took place virtually and attracted attendees on a global scale, so we tracked the energy consumption of streaming. The total emissions from this event were 0.42 tonnes of CO2.

We are offsetting these emissions with the Cooking Practices Project in Nigeria, which involves manufacturing and distribution of efficient charcoal cookstoves that would replace the inefficient cookstoves currently being used in the host country of Nigeria. This will prevent thousands of families, small and medium commercial entities from returning to cutting down trees to meet their cooking needs. This project contributes towards Sustainable Development Goals 1, 7 and 15, as households no longer need to spend money on firewood and other cooking fuels, the stoves are more energy efficient and families won’t need to destroy forests for wood.
