Pathways Alliance is a collaboration between Canada’s six largest oil sands companies, representing about 95% of Canada’s oil sands production. Phase one of the project will connect 13 CCS facilities from north of Fort McMurray to the Cold Lake region to a carbon storage hub in the Cold Lake region. This will be achieved through utilisation of a pipeline approximately 400-kilometers long, which will transport liquid CO2 to be stored safely underground. Operations are expected to start between 2029 and 2030. Phase 2, which is planned between 2031 and 2040, would tie in at least another 8 oil sands projects, whilst also ramping up alternative energy initiatives.
