Decarb Connect Project Directory

At Decarb Connect we’re on a single mission, to accelerate industrial decarbonisation around the world. We’ve therefore created this project directory to provide clarity on activity in energy-intensive sectors. Complete the form below to identify projects and potential consortia partners easily.

Why have we put the directory together?

The importance of industrial decarbonisation is critical in understanding the wider energy transition debate. Industrial activity in 2021 was directly responsible for emitting 9.4 Gt of CO2, accounting for a quarter of global emissions. In line with the IEA’s Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, industrial emissions need to fall to about 7 Gt CO2 by 2030.

As this project directory demonstrates, work has already begun. A series of pilot projects have paved the way for commercial scale projects that can have a significant impact on industrial emissions.

Right now, the directory focuses on commercial scale projects that implement low carbon production processes in Europe and North America. Our goal is to expand the focus over time and we welcome submissions from around the world

Technologies and projects are just part of the solution

Technologies and projects are just part of the industrial decarbonisation picture. Factors such as renewable fuels and energy efficiency also play a key role. For these technologies to become viable, it does not only require successful implementation at an industrial site but also development of critical infrastructure. This requires projects that aim to develop hydrogen infrastructure, such as H2ercules and HySynergy. As well as projects which aim to develop carbon dioxide storage infrastructure, such as Heartland Greenway and Porthos. Furthermore, the agreement between Yara and the Northern Lights consortium to store CO2 from the Sluiskil site has opened the market for cross-border CO2 transport and storage. This is an opportunity that could prove crucial for Northern European decarbonisation in the coming decade.

The outlook to date

From our research, we have identified 178 planned projects which seek to aid industrial decarbonisation. 31% of these being in North America and 69% in Europe, mostly in the Northwest region.

Breakdown or project types:

  • 44% green hydrogen/electrolysis,
  • 19% CCS hubs or storage facilities
  • 37% carbon capture facilities/blue hydrogen

It is important to note that many of these projects are still in the early stages of development. They face many challenges to get them over the line, particularly those due to be operational towards the end of the decade.

If you think your project fits into the scope of this directory and it’s not featured, complete the ‘Profile My Project’ or email hello@decarbconnect.com. We’d love to hear from you.
